Australia is a representative democracy where people elect representatives to make decisions for them. You vote at federal elections to elect people to represent you in the Australian Federal Parliament. Parliament is a decision-making body, which is made up of two houses – The House of Representatives and The Senate.

The House of Representatives

Australian is divided into 148 areas called “Divisions”. Voters in each division elect one person to represent them in the House of Representatives.

The Senate

Each State and Territory elects Senators to represent it in the Senate. States have 12 Senators and the NT and ACT have two.

The Coalition makes up of two right wing parties – Liberal Party of Australia and National Party of Australia.

Liberal Party right side of politics.  It claims to stand for the interest of the individual, families, and free enterprises.

The National Party Further right side of politics. It looks after the interest of farmers.

The Democrats is there to keep the “bastards” honest.

Labour Party is on the left side of politics and it bases on socialism, claiming to stand for fairness, equality and labour rights.
